Old Brailes Photos PDF Print E-mail

Hello, All
I am a Brailes girl born and bred but now live in Herefordshire (perhaps a bit too old to be called 'girl' ;) winking) my parents are Charlie & Mary Cuthbert of Jeffs Close. I have a photo of Springfield Lodge (we used to live there when I was growing up.) There are a couple stood outside who my mum thinks worked for the people in the big house. Mum also thinks the couples name is Sharpe, and is probably the great great grandad of mums friend Thelma, she is not 100% on that though. I have attached photo but if you would like the original to copy please let me know.
Best Wishes
Julia Parsons
PS The Brailes village website is brilliant and brought back a lot of memories.

Carol Clark sent in this photo & would love to find out more about this photo, who's in the photo, and whether they have any connection to her family (it was found amongst some old family papers)

Some seventy years ago I lived at Rose Cottage next to the chapel on the green at 'Middle Brailes'. At that time the post office was next to Steep Orchard and kept by a Miss Clayden. There was a central path up a long front garden like the picture and the house on the left looks a bit like Steep Orchard to me. Post Office records may be able to confirm or deny - if they can be bothered !
Good website v. nostalgic. Looking at 'Brailes in 1978' article I remember Mr Crook the butcher from the war when he used to tell mother he had 'a nice bit of orfal (sic) for her'. Milk was delivered by Joiner and ladled from a churn and occasionally, when the milk lorry couldn't get through, we had a kilner jar of cream so thick it had to be spooned; with the skim going to his pigs. Otherwise cream making was banned. Joiner also had a cider press. Two other farmers were messrs Cotteral and Green.
As for us, no electricity, tap on the green and a privy down the garden - but a small boys paradise. Walk to the old school in Lower Brailes and then play in Sutton Brook or Hen Brook on the way home. Muddy, wet and happy.

All the best. Peter Phillips
